BEFORE THE BRAND
I'm James Milaras, founder of Joker and the Thief.
It began in my first year of high school with magic tricks, but it was cardistry that truly captured me. Where magic hides its method, cardistry celebrates it: a visual, almost hypnotic display of skill and motion. I was hooked. I practiced between classes, through lunch breaks, anywhere I could fan, cut, and flourish a deck.
The deeper I went, the more a second love took hold. I'd been drawn to design and storytelling since I was a kid, and I started to see the deck itself as the real canvas. Not the trick, and not the flourish. In the end, I fell for playing cards even harder than I'd fallen for cardistry.
That obsession became a company.
WHO WE ARE
Joker and the Thief was founded in 2015. I realised that the majority of playing cards on the market were mediocre. Playing cards generally featured underwhelming designs, coupled with sub-par manufacturing quality.
So why not create a brand that strictly produced playing cards with all of the best attributes that I had seen in my favourite decks? I took matters into my own hands to create something new. The vision was clear - each deck had to have a unique and compelling design, it had to be luxurious, and had to be produced at to the highest standards possible.
The First Deck
Our first deck was designed while finishing high school, with the artwork paid for with the wages from a job at a local restaurant. The illustrations alone took more than a year to complete.
Then I took it to Kickstarter. While I was still a student, the campaign raised $23,000. And so, the first Joker and the Thief deck was born, brought to life with our friend and longtime collaborator, illustrator Pedro Oyarbide.
It carried every visual quality we believed a deck could have. And it told us something we've never forgotten...
We were onto something special.

Our Custom Approach
The key to an incredible deck of playing cards is a compelling story coupled with world class artwork. We begin with a great story, theme and artistic vision. We refuse to compromise on either one of these elements.
Every Joker and the Thief deck is illustrated from scratch, entirely by hand. From the Ace of Spades to the court cards to the numbers themselves, every element is original.
Nothing is borrowed. Everything is bespoke.
Telling a story
Story is what sets us apart, and what keeps us there. It's how we stay a step ahead of the competition, releasing fresh, original decks that no one else could make.
It always begins with a theme: a single idea strong enough to build a world around. From there, working alongside world-class artists, we layer in symbolism thread by thread, weaving meaning through the court cards, the pips, the back design, and the tuck case, until every element speaks to the same idea. What started as a concept becomes a mythology, a world with its own logic and language, complete enough to hold in your hands.
That is the difference between a deck you use and a deck you keep.

The Quality Revolution
True quality begins with casino-grade paper stock. Each card is built from two layers of stock bonded by a black glue core, a feature that keeps the card opaque under light while giving it a crisp, substantial feel and exceptional durability. Our cards are made to be played, shuffled, and handled for years.
That stock is then finished with a specialised linen-embossed coating, applied by roller to form a fine texture of air pockets across the surface. The effect is a deck that springs, glides, and slides with effortless precision.
Making a Statement
Every tuck case is produced on specialised machinery and printing presses engineered for extraordinary control over detail and finish, using the world's best paper stock: casino-grade quality, inside and out. We layer in techniques like foil stamping and embossing, so that the moment your fingers meet the textured surface, the standard is unmistakable. Luxury, before a single card is drawn.
