Card Clips: What Are They and What Are Their Benefits?

Card Clips: What Are They and What Are Their Benefits? - Joker and the Thief

You may be new to the world of playing cards. You may not be. But there is one important accessory that is often overlooked. A Card Clip.

Put simply, a card clip operates similarly to a money clip. You may have seen them clipped around a deck of cards in photos and wondered, "What is the point?"

And we'll tell you. Here's a list of the main benefits of using a Card Clip.

PLAYING CARD LONGEVITY

Let's start with the longevity that a card clip affords you. We are going to talk more about protecting your cards in the other points but we think that this really deserves to be mentioned.

You may have heard in the past that a fantastic way to extend the life of your playing cards is to have a few decks on a rotating cycle. This means that if you are using your cards for magic or cardistry (this could even apply to avid card game players) that you'd cycle between a select few and use them until they are heavily worn. This extends the life of a deck by splitting your usage over several decks over time. Pretty simple stuff really.

However, if you were to use a selection of card clips on these decks, you could extend the life of those decks even longer and add to their durability.

More bang for your buck essentially. In the next point, we'll explain why this happens.

Also, it is worth mentioning that we often call a very worn in deck of playing cards a "poop deck" as coined by The Cuso, also known as Alejandro Portela. You want to keep these worn out cards because they are incredibly comfortable to use and they can help you when trying to learn new flourishes. A deck in a clip has a far better chance of helping you create a literal asset for your cardistry practice.

STRAIGHTENING IT OUT

Let's get one thing straight. Straight cards are good cards. The second main benefit of a card clip is returning your cards to their original shape after use. As a flow on from the first point, this dramatically increases the longevity and durability of the deck of playing cards that you are using. Warped cards get out of hand fast, and if you live in a humid environment, you will go through cards  RAPIDLY. So, a card clip doubles as a preventative measure for humid environments if you live in a part of the world that is hot and sticky. We have had to battle humid climates for almost 10 years, and a card clip saved our asses.

BOX PROTECTION

A lesser benefit of card clips are the protection they offer to the box. Now, take this with a grain of salt, because this is not going to keep your tuck box in pristine condition. If you have a deck with foil, and embossing, expect some cosmetic damage. However, and this is important, if you are travelling a lot, a card clip will offer more protection than if the deck was not in a clip at all. While you're on the move it keeps your deck in one place and protects the majority of its surfaces, while giving you the benefits of the previous points,

Trust us, this is worth it 1000%.

THEY LOOK AMAZING

This is a lesser point. But card clips come in a variety of materials and can really be tailored to your personality. You can get them in a variety of colours. We've seen them made from brass, stainless steel, and aluminium. We've seen them inlayed with luxurious materials like wood grain and mother of pearl. They're customisable. Beyond looking very stylish, that's about it!
